GRAND MESA CLASSIC RESULTS

Today we once again proved the old Colorado adage that if you don’t like the weather, wait 5 minutes. We saw a wide variety of conditions before, during and after the race but nordic skiers are a tough breed and roll with the punches so 56 racers completed the course with most reporting a great experience. We had ordered a little calm and sunshine for race time which came off just right except that we had to delay the start by 45 minutes while the wonderful U. of Wyoming people took their vans to rescue the Air Force team who were snowed in and stuck in their lodge’s parking lot. When the race actually started the wind had picked up and the temps had dropped a little. All the more reason to ski fast and get back to the hot soup kitchen!

And ski fast they did. Chris Lange of Western State came cruising in with a comfortable gap for the win over Pat Rodgers of Wyoming and Tre Anastasia of Colorado Mesa U. Christie Aschwanden was impressive as always as the 1st woman finisher and as the 1st citizen racer overall. The collegiate women were led by Wyoming’s Sierra Jech followed by our own CMU’s Mira Hopkins and Kacie McCleary. Matt Deeths said he hit the wax perfectly and used that to finish as the 1st citizen male.
