The Colorado Mesa University Nordic Ski Team is teaming up with the Grand Mesa Nordic Council to hold a vintage ski race on Saturday, January 28 at Skyway.

Racers will start together in parade formation and ski one lap of the 1 kilometer (0.6mile) sprint course.

All eras and types of skis and ski attire are encouraged. The event will be scored in figure skating style, with points being given for finish time, style, costume (er, vintage ski apparel), ski age and material (extra points for wooden skis), and crowd appeal.

Prizes and awards will given for best in show, best skis, attire, and any other categories that the judges deem appropriate.

Pull out your wooden skis, that old neon skisuit or your woolen knickers and join the fun. Renowned MC and Woody Creek native Mike Trecker will once again be officiating.

The race starts around 11:30am. Registration opens at 10am. No entry fee, just a suggested $10 donation to the CMU team.

The Vintage Ski Race will take place in between rounds of the Mesa State Invitational Sprint, an exciting sprint event (think skiercross) pitting racers head-to-head in pursuit of a fast and furious finish. Come cheer on the home team in this spectator-friendly event!

Mesa Meltdown race Saturday

The Mesa Meltdown race is this Saturday, March 12 at Skyway. Looks like we might live up to the name and actually be melting down a little with warmish temps predicted. Could be fast for some of you!

This race is a freestyle race. There’s a choice of 5K or 20K with a simultaneous mass start at 11 AM. Sign up before the race in the Skyway parking lot. There will be chili, prizes and lots of samples from our great sponsors Clif Bar and Justins Nut Butter.

This is our Race Series Finale. Only the 20K counts for Series points. To see Series results so far after 3 of 4 races, look here: 2011 Series Results You’ll see that Terry Daley leads Winslow Robertson for the Men’s lead but Terry will have to show up to capture the title. Likewise, Brooke Bosman currently leads the Women but will miss this race because she’s at Nationals with the Mesa State College Team. That means there’s opportunity for Helen Carlsen and the other women who are trailing. Should be fun to see how it turns out!

Barnelopet Kids Day almost here

Our annual ski day for kids is this Saturday! Come get a taste of cross country skiing.

Saturday, March 5
9TH ANNUAL BARNELOPET for KIDS
Info: call 434-9753, 249-1869.
The 9th Annual Barnelopet cross country ski day for kids will be held on Sat., Mar. 5 at Skyway on Grand Mesa. This free day for kids ages 3-16 begins with registration in the Skyway parking lot from 10 to 11, free lessons at 11 and a fun race at Noon with distance based on ability. Kids must bring their own personal or rental ski equipment since none will be available on site.

Brought to you by the Sons of Norway Vestafjell Lodge and the Grand Mesa Nordic Council.

We need volunteers willing to take kids out for a short lesson/tour. No need to be a seasoned instructor, just patience and the ability to get them into their skis, give them pointers on how to move foward, how to negotiate hills and help them get up from falls. I’m looking for help from 10 until about 12:30 or any increments of that span. Give Tom a call, 434-9753.
