Barnelopet Kids Day almost here

Our annual ski day for kids is this Saturday! Come get a taste of cross country skiing.

Saturday, March 5
9TH ANNUAL BARNELOPET for KIDS
Info: call 434-9753, 249-1869.
The 9th Annual Barnelopet cross country ski day for kids will be held on Sat., Mar. 5 at Skyway on Grand Mesa. This free day for kids ages 3-16 begins with registration in the Skyway parking lot from 10 to 11, free lessons at 11 and a fun race at Noon with distance based on ability. Kids must bring their own personal or rental ski equipment since none will be available on site.

Brought to you by the Sons of Norway Vestafjell Lodge and the Grand Mesa Nordic Council.

We need volunteers willing to take kids out for a short lesson/tour. No need to be a seasoned instructor, just patience and the ability to get them into their skis, give them pointers on how to move foward, how to negotiate hills and help them get up from falls. I’m looking for help from 10 until about 12:30 or any increments of that span. Give Tom a call, 434-9753.

New Trail Map

An updated trail map is now available on line as well as at the trail heads.  Thanks to Tom Ela and Amanda Moore for all the effort put into this piece.  Go to the “Trails” tab above, click on “Trail Map” and you will be able to download a viewable .pdf file suitable for framing.

Skyway Skuffle Results (*AND VIDEO) Posted

New: video of the Skuffle now posted here: Skyway Skuffle 2011 video.

Yes, racers did show up on this cold New Years Day. It was much more invigorating and rewarding than sitting at home drinking beer and watching Bowl games on TV. Results have now been posted: Look under “Programs” on the top Menu bar.

Ski the Pineapple Express

We are in for it! A look at weather satellite imagery this weekend will show a long stream of moisture from off the Pacific directly into Western Colorado, often called a Pineapple Express as it originates near the Hawaiian Isles.

This moist and rather mild stream of moisture is forecast through Thursday of next week, finally letting up just in time for Christmas Eve. By the end of this prolonged wet period, the Grand Mesa trails will see feet of new snow. One model (NAM12) is producing 3 feet of new snow by Tuesday, another model (GFS) has 4 feet by Thursday. Southwest winds at mountain top level mean that Ward Creek and County Line will get higher snow amounts, while Powderhorn will get less. Still there is reasonable hope that Powderhorn will be able to open sometime next week. If you are Jonesing for some downhill skiing, Durango Mountains Resort and Crested Butte will likely do very well in this storm.

Temperatures will range from the upper teens to low 20s in the early morning to low to mid 30s in the afternoons. If you have splurged on high fluro waxes, now might be the time to use them. Also expect the roads to be very slick at times due to a rain-snow icy mix. Slow down and don’t end upside down!

Southwest winds will be strong at times causing blowing and drifting snow in the open areas. Areas of fog will make for some magical skiing and frosted eyelashes, but take extra care not to get lost out there.

The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Storm Warning at least through Tuesday, and it will likely be extended. Take extra time and care when traveling, and it will be a very fun ski period.

Its not too late to renew your membership to the GMNC. The GMNC is a grassroots organization that is dependent on member’s donation to create the nordic wonderland on top. And your donation is tax deductible.

Enjoy!

Follow the Grooming Track

As many of you know, we supplied our groomers last year with SPOT personal GPS messengers.   This was put in place as an emergency notification system, but the technology and features allow us to go beyond that.  We are currently testing real live tracking, which will send a ping every 10 minutes applied to Google Maps, showing the grooming path in the last 24 hours, depicted through a web link.

Use the following links for the very latest near real time grooming:

Skyway/County Line

Ward Creek

If you know our trails and terrain, you will be able to determine if your favorite trail was groomed, or is in the process of.   It will take some tweaking, but we feel it has real value to our members, especially post storm, and any other time “up to the (10) minute” information makes for a better ski day!
