Highway 65 Closed

Sunday Morning Feb 27, 2011

Highway 65 continues to be closed from gate to gate atop the Mesa.  This comes as no surprise after driving around two natural slides myself Saturday.  And it got better (or worse).  3-5″ my keester.  Try 18″ to 30″ with associated high winds.

Tremendous back country skiing opportunities await upon re-opening. Drop Lycra for Gore.  Avalanche control work scheduled for early a.m. Sunday, related clean-out etc.   Use www.cotrip.org for the very latest on the road.

There is no estimated re-opening at this time.   We hope to resume grooming operations in the early afternoon.  Quite a bit of work.  The Ward trails remain accessible as we let the new snow settle.

New Month, New Snow

Tuesday, February 1 , 2011

Overview:

7″ on the new is on the ground at Skyway this morning.  It is butt cold, right around minus 5 now.  Forecast high?  3.  Wind chills to minus 20.   Jon will be up to start the cat and do some grooming, mostly in the trees.  With the high winds and cold, it’s kind of a maintenance day, fix a few things here and there, wait it out, and see what the rest of the week brings.

For Wednesday

For Wednesday, February 2, 2011

Overview:

Cold conditions will be found at all trailheads .   Skyway and County Line were groomed Tuesday upon more snow than initially indicated, about 10″ of extremely light, slow powder.  Jon reported a high of -4 during his shift.  Wind chills far below that, it’s no exposed skin weather.  We will groom down at Ward when it warms a bit, probably Thursday, for the sake of Al’s fingers and feet.

Overview:

Some new snow on the trails this morning with the expectation that it continues until the noon hour.   Not a ray of sunshine in the forecast through the Holiday weekend.   Too bad.   Grooming will take place, if that brings a smile to your face.    Start thinking about getting in on the Citizen’s Division for the Mesa State Sprints skaters!   For those of you who got out yesterday, what a day!

Road/race update

As of this morning, 12/31, highway 65 is still closed and CDOT has not set an estimated opening time yet. Normally these closures don’t last more than 24 hours, but we’re at more than 36 now, and nothing is certain.

Check back here this evening for an update on road conditions, grooming and the race.

Our race director, Tom Ela, will make a decision about the race later today and we will post an update by 6pm this evening. We hope to hold the race tomorrow, 1/1 as planned, but if necessary will move the race to Sunday.

Stay warm!

Conditions for Friday

For Friday, December 31, 2010

Overview:

For the very latest on Hwy 65-

www.cotrip.org

With the Highway closed now for almost 24 hours, conditions are quite natural.  We will be back on the snow with all hands and tools as soon as we can once again access Skyway and County Line.   This snow is extremely dry and the temps incredibly cold.  It will pack in about like powdered sugar.

Over at Ward, you may find a bit faster glide in the classic tracks  once they are again set.

The Firm

For Sunday, January 16, 2011

Temps move up and down, sun, clouds, sun, clouds.   Trails are firm and fast.  Now, being a Glider’s program day, weather wise, you would think it might snow or at least blow sideways.   The streak should be broken Annie.  A good day in store for all shapes, sizes and ages – if you don’t mind Winter.  Refurbish grooming starts at 6:30 a.m.  Enjoy.
